Dial-Up Internet
Access through the Internet Access and Training Program (IATP)
for Alumni of ECA Academic Exchange Programs
The Internet Access
and Training Program (IATP) provides alumni with the opportunity
to continue their professional and academic development after
returning home from the United States. It also provides a forum
in which alumni can share the experiences and knowledge they
gained in the United States with professional and academic colleagues
back home. Wherever possible, the IATP program actively collaborates
with alumni to develop new and interesting Internet resources
in local languages and in English.
IATP
works towards these goals by offering a rich array of services
to alumni. These services include, but are not limited to, training
courses in subjects ranging from basic computer literacy to
advanced web site development, specialized training seminars,
dial-up Internet access, and a grants competition designed to
promote the development of local Internet resources.
One
of IATP's most popular services for alumni is dial-up access
to the Internet. At present, more than 650 alumni use the dial-up
service. IREX now seeks to utilize the enthusiasm and expertise
of its alumni dial-up subscribers to expand the content and
training resources available to alumni through IATP and to the
Internet more generally.
The
development of Internet resources is a valuable way for alumni
to share the skills and knowledge acquired in the United States
with professional and academic colleagues at home, facilitiating
increased mutual understanding through ECA-sponsored international
education and training programs. In addition, by developing
locally-based Internet resources, alumni are expanding and enriching
the amount of information available on-line in and about their
home country. This assists IATP in fulfilling its goals and
benefits millions of Internet users all over the world at the
same time.
IATP
has created a new version of the "IATP Dial-Up Internet
Access Agreement for Alumni". The agreement now includes
a section asking alumni to identify a way in which they will
participate in the program and contribute to the development
of resources, acting as a partner in achieving the program's
goals. IATP has created the following four categories of alumni
participation;
- Organization and presentation of seminars
and other IATP sponsored events
- Electronic publication of academic materials
completed in the United States or at home to the IATP web
site in both English and local language.
- Creation of a web site devoted to professional,
personal, or academic themes.
- Assist with the administration of IATP
Internet Access Centers as a volunteer.
The
following pages more specifically explain these four points.
Alumni that choose to develop an on-line resource can take advantage
of IATP training courses free-of-charge to acquire the necessary
skills to complete, publish, and maintain on-line informational
resources.
